Three Tips to Better Summer Boating

Lake of the Ozarks would not be what it is without boating.  The Lake Area has become a mecca over the last 75 years for exceptional boating, here are a few tips that will make your season more enjoyable on the water. 

 

• One of the least enjoyable aspects of boating is keeping you vessel clean, especially in the spring and early summer when pollen is abundant.  One way that you can reduce your cleaning time and spend more time on the water is by waxing your boat.  Wax fills the tiny scratches and pores that collect and retain that green pollen.  A quick wipe will take pollen of easily on a waxed boat and will save time cleaning before you go out.  Also wax works well on glass windows, hatches and windshields.  Just apply as you would normally to your boat or car and wipe clean.  This will leave a streak free and very smooth surface that is much easier to wipe clean.  Be carefull not to get wax on any rubber seals or other materials because it can be very hard to get off.
• Check all of your fluids and visible hoses.  Even though you probably recently had your boat de-winterized a quick run through and double-check is always a good idea and can save you an afternoon getting towed in and unnecessary work.
• One item that is often overlooked and can cause a risk to yourself and other boaters are navigation lights.  Many people neglect to check these very necessary items and are unaware that they don’t work until it’s already dark.  Make a quick check of these during the day if you plan on being out after dark.  Keeping spare bulbs on hand is never a bad idea either, in an emergency a flash light with either a red or green cloth over the light can be a temporary fix for a burned out navigation light.

Entertaining at the Lake of the Ozarks

Chances are you didn’t rent a great vacation home or condo, or buy your own place here at Lake of the Ozarks to sit around by yourself.  One of the best things about any vacation property is being able to share the experience with friends.  If you’re planning on having  friends or family over for a meal and drinks here are a couple quick and easy tips that will make it easy and fun for everyone. 

• Keep it Simple – You are on vacation to relax, don’t stress yourself out by picking an overly elaborate menu, or complicated dishes.  You don’t want to spend the entire time in the kitchen, make sure you can enjoy spending some time with family and friends.  You can also do this with the menu you plan on serving.  Some gatherings like bar-b-ques, and fish fries are social events in them self and allow the host to mix and entertain while cooking.
• Plan Ahead -  This tip can save you a lot of stress and time.  Get a solid count of how many people you plan on having over.  Sometimes this will dictate the menu in itself.  A sit down, multi-course plated dinner party is tough for twenty people when you only have seating for ten.  Appetizers and tapas dishes are a great idea for a larger informal get together and most of the work can be finished ahead of time.  Doing as much of the preparation ahead of time as possible allows you to easily finish the meal and serve your guests. 
• Don’t Forget the Beverages – Lake of the Ozarks is a great place to enjoy a beer, glass of wine, cocktail, or frozen drink.  Make sure you are sensitive to your guests, don’t have a party of one, offer plenty of non-alcoholic options and certainly encourage calling cabs if necessary.  Frozen drinks are a great way to cool off, and enjoy an afternoon.  They are also easily converted into non-alcoholic drinks that are something out of the ordinary and delicious.  Check out the recipe below for Strawberry – Mango Margaritas

Strawberry – Mango Margarita , this recipe is designed to be blended in a standard kitchen blender and will make approximately four,  10 oz drinks.

• Fill blender with ice leaving 2. in of space at top.
• 8oz. tequila of your choice
• 4oz. triple-sec, Cointreau, or Grand Marnier
• 8oz. lime juice, fresh squeezed is the best
• 4oz. orange juice
• 8 – 10  strawberries
• 1/2 of a mango
• sugar (optional)
   

Blend until smooth, and fruit is mixed well.  If mix is too thick add water of orange juice as needed.  Garnish with citrus of your choice, or use mango.  Serve in salt or sugar rimmed glasses if desired.

The card game is simple, make your optional $15.00 donation and get your first card at that participating venue, visit other establishments on the map and collect a card at each, for a full hand of seven cards.  With over thirty participating local waterfront restaurants,  bars, shops, and gas docks there are plenty of opportunities to make a full hand in a day. 

So what happens when you get that royal flush with an ace kicker? Easy, you turn in your hand where you drew your last card to receive your prize by mail, they will be in the form of gift certificates.  There is also and option to buy an 8th card for your hand at the last stop.  So you’re like us and never win?  Also not a problem at this poker game, there are prizes given for the worst hand, and if you just want to keep going you can buy another hand to play, remember there are thirty-nine stops and all day to do it so why not.  Additional proceeds after prizes are given go the Lake of the Ozarks Convention and Visitors Bureau to fund this and other like promotions around the Lake Area.

This weekend, April 29th – 31st, The Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the 23rd annual Magic Dragon Street Meet and first annual GENERATION Next Magic Dragon show.  This is a must see for any car enthusiast.  The Magic Dragon Street Meet takes place on the Bagnell Dam Strip, where hundreds of classic and collectible cars cruise and park along the roadway.  GENERATION Next will be held at Prewitt’s Point shopping center and will feature modern custom tuner imports and domestics.
